Irish International Dave Savage was signed by Rovers in Summer 2003 by ex-boss Ray Graydon. Savage had his first taste of English League Football in 1994 when he was brought from the Irish League to Millwall by Mick McCarthy, his successful Millwall career of 133 league games and six goals earned him full international recognition on five occasions. Ian Atkins paid £80k to take the tough tackling midfield player to Northampton in 1998, where he made a further 113 appearances, scoring on eighteen occasions.

Dave was signed by Oxford boss Mark Wright in August 2001, but by November that year he was reunited with ex-boss Atkins, as Ian took the Oxford job. Despite being awarded Player of the Season for his efforts at the U’s in 2002/3, a row with chairman Firoz Kassam forced Savage to leave. In his first season with the Gas, Dave made an important contribution to the team, and now once again reunited with Atkins he looks sure to feature heavily once again.
