Relegation rivals Boston United and Bristol Rovers had to settle for a point apiece in a result which did little to improve either side's standing.

The match had started in low key fashion with neither side being able to show much creativity on the difficult surface.

In fact it took until the 16th minute for a chance to arrive, but even then Wayne Carlisle's shot for Rovers flew over the top after Boston had only partially cleared a corner.

In reply, the home side went close on 20 minutes when Ben Chapman fired inches too high after linking well with Richard Logan.

Bristol responded once more and home keeper Paul Bastock had to dive at the feet of Paul Tait, who tried to connect with a cross by Vitalijs Astafjevs.

Back at the other end Boston went close with a Mark Greaves header and then a Paddy McCarthy shot following a corner by Simon Weatherstone.

Towards the interval both sides continued to battle hard to try and find a route to ascendancy, but creativity was practically impossible on a pudding of a pitch.

Boston opened brightly in the second half with Stuart Douglas firing wide from a Chapman pass and then on 51 minutes Logan forced Scott Howie into an important save with a prodded shot from close range.

Then at the other end Bastock dashed out bravely to save at the feet of a clean through Tait.

Boston introduced sub James Gould and Neil Redfearn in a bid to inject more life into their play and instantly Logan burst clear but fired too high.

The home side had a let-off in the 65th minute when keeper Bastock handled outside his area following a poor backpass by Chapman, but referee Lee Mason hoisted only a yellow card.

Boston hit back again and headers from Douglas and Redfearn tested Howie as the game entered its final 15 minutes.

Then in the 82nd minute more home pressure brought another chance for Douglas, but he fired over the bar.

In the dying moments Boston threw everything into attack, but were denied by a Rovers backline well marshalled by Kevin Austin and Adam Barrett.
