James Hayter left the Memorial Stadium convinced he should have been Bournemouth's matchwinner.

The midfield player rose to head home on 49 minutes after Rovers goalkeeper Scott Howie had parried Warren Feeney's fierce shot, but the celebrations were cut short as referee Scott Mathieson spotted some pushing.

Hayter was convinced he had jumped early and scored a fair goal, a view shared by Bournemouth boss Sean O'Driscoll.

A draw was a fair result to a scrappy game fought out on a hard pitch that made the ball bobble. Bournemouth created most of the few chances made with the pace of Feeney always a threat.

Hayter fired wide from his side's best first-half chance just before the break after Feeney's pass had given him space inside the box.

Rovers went closest early in the second half when the stretching Giuliano Grazioli just failed to connect with Paul Tait's low cross shot.

Bournemouth lost striker Steve Fletcher with a knee injury after only 19 minutes and were never at their best.

Struggling Rovers fought hard in midfield, without managing to force a testing save from Neil Moss as their final pass lacked penetration and direction.

Former Rovers midfielder Marcus Browning almost grabbed some glory against his old club, but his 67th minute header from a Hayter cross was palmed over by Howie.

Rovers sent on Mark McKeever and Dave Gilroy in a bid to pep their shot-shy attack, but it was midfielder Rob Quinn who provided their most threatening second-half moment with a 71st minute volley from the edge of the box that flew wide.

Neither side was helped by the tricky pitch which made control difficult.

Together with a committed attitude from both sets of players, it made for a game of stop and start with neither side able to exert any control.
