Junior Agogo's 13th goal of the season lifted a dire game where the entertainment value was close to zero.

While so many final balls went astray the Rovers striker found a perfect finish in the 28th minute to drive home a chance made for him by his skipper James Hunt.

It was a hammer blow for Bury as they sank to their sixth loss in seven games.

Their central defenders Colin Woodthorpe and Dave Challinor had been handling the threat of Agodo and Richard Walker without much trouble but were wrong-footed as Hunt found Agogo with a throughball along the 18-yard line.

Openings like that were rare as both sides concentrated on the quick shut-down to squeeze any creative action.

The only likely chances came from set-pieces. A well-worked short corner routine promised to increase the home side's lead when Craig Disley out-jumped the Shakers defence at the far post but the header went wide.

Disley was soon in action at the other end denying Bury a leveller as he threw himself into a desperate tackle to block a Colin Marrison shot. It followed a foul by Christian Edwards which brought him a final warning.

Referee Steve Dorr was equally lenient when Matt Tipton ended a run by Lewis Haldane with a blatant trip. It could easily have been a red card but as the players shook hands Dorr reached for yellow.

There was slightly more ambition to the second half with Bury working hard in search of an equaliser but the best move came from a break opened up by Agogo. He released Haldane on the right for a cross Walker knew he should have put in the back of the net.
