Rovers gamble on five transfer deadline signings paid off with their first win in eleven games.
It saw them claw their way past York who have been sucked into a survival fight after an even bleaker run.
Playing under their third managerial team of the season, Russell Osman and Kevan Broadhurst, Rovers had the luxury of two quick goals in the first half - both from free kicks.
The first after 18 minutes involved three of their new boys Aaron Lescott (Stockport) who was fouled and Ali Gibb (Stockport) who took the free kick.
The third player was Danny Williams from Kidderminster who seized the ball as it came out from the kick and drilled it back 20 yards past keeper Chris Porter.
York had no time to recover as two minutes later Gary Twigg was sliding a free kick from the right flank past their defence. Porter was too far off his line and racing through Adam Barrett was able to claim his third kick of the season.
The Rovers centre-back though went on to give away too many free kicks around the box and with half an hour gone York saw an opportunity to get into the game when he flattened Andy Bell.
The run up sequence of three corners did not worry the steady Kevin Miller in goal.
In contrast to Rovers frenzy in the market place York made only one signing, borrowing Jon Newby from Huddersfield.
He was on early in the second half replacing Bell but by then the result had already gone beyond York.
With the second half barely a minute old Junior Agogo broke fast from the half way line. He moved the ball forward to Danny Williams who, sensing he was slightly off balance, knocked it out to Gibb.
The right flanker steadied and saw his shot take a meaningful deflection as it winged past Porter.
